Liu Clear 1st In Wendy's V; A.Smith Perfect In Lower Section > Five Masters! Will Compete In Wendy's VI<
A record number of 53 different players competed in Wendy's V which ended 6-30.  In the Top Section, NM Daniel Liu (1988), after observing the state of affairs on the Bd:2 (Newton- Fuerstman 1 f4 e5 2 fe d6 3 ed Bd6 4 Nf3 Nf6 5 d4 Bf5 6 g3 c5!? 7 dc Qa5 8 b4! Qb4 9 c3! Qc5 10 Ba3! +- and White won on move 22)  needed only to Draw with Patrick McCartney in order to score 3-2 and claim clear 1st Place. In the Middle Section, CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas (1686) emerged victorious with a similar score, and in the Lower Section recent returnee to CCC competition Anthony Smith (1054) scored a perfect 5-0!  Also, in the Lower Section Sean Johnson  (Unr) turned in a perfect 4-0!  All results may be viewed in  Current Crosstable.

Five Masters to include FIDE Master Luigi Vacca, NM Garrick Wells, NM John Lane, NM Daniel Liu and NM Leland Fuerstman have indicated that they will play all five rounds of Wendy's VI which begins next Wednesday.  In order to accommodate Master Vacca, the Director has agreed to allow his games to be played at 60/G and begin at 7:30pm.  All other games will be played at the rate of 30/1 with adjournments, if necessary.  All other Masters not named are welcome to compete with us! (If they have the guts).
McCartney Unseats Spurrier at Midtown XIX; Roman Wins Lower Section
Fourteen brave competitors competed in Midtown  XIX on Saturday, June 5.  In the Top Section, High Point star Robert Spurrier's (2021) streak of two consecutive Midtown Tournaments came to an abrupt end when after defeating  Tarokh Taefi (1734) in Rd:1 and NM Leland Fuerstman (2035) in Rd:2 he assumed a favorable position against Patrick McCartney (1875) only to blunder a piece away and lose. McCartney's score of 2.5-.5 was good enough for clear 1st Place and $80. Tied for 2nd-4th with 2-1 were NM Daniel Liu (2018), NM Leland Fuerstman (2035), and Robert Spurrier (2021) each winning $13.33.  Phil Lowder at "plowder@ctc.net" submitted his Rd:1 game for publication  (See game 0050)  In the Lower Section, Leader of the Hispanic Community David Roman (1303)  successfully handled Samuel Fuerstman (947) in the final round to score 2.5-.5 and capture clear 1st Place honors and $60.  Samuel Fuerstman and Lee Richardson (1195) tied for 2nd-3rd with 2-1 winning $15 each. L. Fuerstman directed.

CCC Yields Two Champions at S.C. Open

Two of the Charlotte Chess Club's finest did our club proud last weekend at the S.C. Open held in Ft. Mill, S.C.  In the Under 1800 Section, Donald "Sky" Hofer (1450) upset Hungarian Superstar Andras Bader (1710) to take clear 1st Place and $220.  In the Under 1200 Section, upstart Brandon Brown (950) continued his winning ways by upsetting at least 4 players with ratings at least 300 points higher than his on his way to taking clear 1st Place and $110.
